Laboratory tests

Allergy testing

Allergy testing is most useful when it helps explain a reaction you have actually experienced. A blood panel can identify IgE sensitisation to selected foods or environmental allergens, giving an allergist more detail for interpreting your history and choosing the next step.

In detail

Why this matters in your care

A careful allergy assessment can help avoid both missed triggers and unnecessary restrictions. Bring a description of symptoms, their timing, suspected exposures and any treatment needed. A broad panel is useful only when its results are interpreted in that clinical context.

Extracts and molecular components

An extract represents a mixture from an allergen source. A molecular component is a more specific protein. The pattern may help an allergist assess cross-reactivity or distinguish different sensitisation profiles, but the significance depends on the allergen and your history.

An example panel covers groups such as pollens, mites, animals, foods and insect venoms. The exact list varies by panel version; the number of entries is not a measure of how clinically useful the test will be for you.

What a positive result means

A positive specific-IgE result shows sensitisation, which is not always a symptomatic allergy. The value alone does not reliably predict the severity of a future reaction. A negative result also needs to be considered alongside the history and test scope.

The next step may be focused allergy testing, a specialist-supervised challenge or an avoidance and emergency plan. Do not reintroduce a food associated with a serious reaction on the basis of a laboratory result alone.
